LAHAINA, Hawaii – The No. 18 Kent State Men's Golf Team completed its fall schedule on Sunday with a ninth-place finish at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
The Golden Flashes (272-297-290–859) shot 6-over in the final round to post a 7-over-par total for the weekend. Chase Johnson (68-77-69–214) led the Flashes on Sunday with a 2-under-par 69 on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Ka'anapali Golf Course, moving up to a 31st-place finish on the individual leaderboard at 1-over.
Ian Holt (66-71-72-–209) enjoyed the best overall finish for the Flashes with a 4-under-par total that put him in a four-way tie for 14th place. Bjarki Petursson (68-76-74–218), Gisli Sveinbergsson (70-75-75–220), and Chris Doody (72-75-76–223) finished in ties for 45th, 60th, and 72nd place, respectively.
Kent State head coach Herb Page talked about the difficulty the Flashes found playing out of the Bermuda rough that surrounded Ka'anapali's greens. Teams from the west coast and desert have a familiarity advantage playing out of Bermuda grass.
"It's not an excuse. It's something our guys are going to need to get more comfortable with in the next two years," said Page. "In June, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee selected Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale to host the NCAA Championship for three years beginning in 2020, and the fairways are rough there are Bermuda."
No. 12 LSU finished as the team champion with a score of 31-under-par – seven ahead of 40th-ranked SOuth Carolina and eight better than No. 15 California.
