Kent State women's basketball members Jordan Korinek and Larissa Lurken were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday as they both earned spots on the Academic All-District Team.
Student-athletes must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and play in half of their team's games to be eligible for the award. Korinek and Lurken are two of six students honored in District 5. They now will both enter consideration for Academic All-America.
Korinek holds a perfect 4.00 as a junior special education major. She has four double-doubles already this season and averages 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds. Korinek recently surpassed the 1,000 career point mark and has been named MAC East Player of the Week and MAC Scholar Athlete of the week twice this season.
Lurken has cemented herself in the Kent State record book during her senior campaign. A nursing major with a 3.72 cumulative GPA, she also achieved her 1,000th career point this season and is Kent State's career record holder in three point baskets. Lurken currently leads the nation in free throws made and attempted and is top in the nation in scoring as she is on pace to break Kent State's single-season scoring record as she is averaging 23.3 points per game.
The duo are two of only three members of the MAC to receive the recognition. This marks the first time a Golden Flash has been named Academic All-District since 2012 and just the second time two students have made the list, as two Flashes earned the award in 2004. Kent State has had just three All-Americans in program history and hasn't had one since 2006. CoSIDA Academic All-Americans will be announced on Thursday, March 2.
