KENT, Ohio – Kent State (26-13, 11-3) attempted to overcome an early deficit but this time could not as it lost 7-4 to Central Michigan (23-19, 11-3) on Saturday night.
The two teams are now again tied atop the Mid-American Conference standings with the deciding game and a sole possession of first place to take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.
For the second day in a row the Chippewas were able to get out to a four-run lead. They led off the game with a triple and ended up scoring three runs in the 1st and added on another in the 2nd on a double and single.
The Golden Flashes got on the board with a run in the bottom of the inning as Dylan Rosa smacked a ground-rule double, advanced to third on a single by Tim DalPorto and came home on a ground ball.
Central Michigan added one to its total in the 4th before Kent State answered with two of its own. Luke Burch led off the bottom of the 4th with a full count walk. Rosa then ripped another double, this one down the left field line for a RBI. Dom Iero switched places with him during the next at-bat with a RBI double of his own, making it a 5-3 game.
The deficit was reduced to one run in the 8th when DalPorto hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded and one out. However, it was the only tally the Flashes would be able to muster in what looked to be a possible rally.
Two more runs for the Chippewas in the final inning solidified a 7-4 victory for them.
Starter Zach Willeman suffered the loss in 3.1 innings with nine hits, five runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Austin Havekost pitched well in relief, shutting out Central Michigan in the next 4.0 innings with three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Patrick Dayton faced two batters while Zach Spangler appeared for the final inning.
Rosa was the only Flash with a multi-hit day as he had two doubles and two runs scored. Kent State was outhit 14-7 on the night.
The series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. and will air on Golden Flashes iHeart Radio.
