KENT, Ohio – Kent State (32-13, 16-3) only allowed four hits on Friday night as a trio of hurlers threw a gem to take down Miami (20-31, 6-13) by a score of 2-1.
The RedHawks weren't able to get a runner to second base until the 5th as Eli Kraus was dominant in the start. The only mar on his line was a double to lead off the 7th that scored on a groundout later in the inning. Kraus also had two walks but struck out five in the win.
Patrick Dayton entered the game and worked out of a jam. He returned to pitch the 8th, giving up a single but then getting outs from the next three batters. Robert Zeigler pitched the 9th to earn his fourth save of the season.
Tim DalPorto helped the Flashes' hurlers with some big plays from behind the plate. In the 2nd with a runner on he snapped a throw down to first to pick him off. When Miami was looking to rally in the 5th with runners on first and second, he had another great throw down to third base to catch the RedHawk trying to steal. DalPorto also threw out another runner, the final out of the game.
Offensively, Kent State did its damage in the 6th. Luke Burch reached on an error and stole second. Mason Mamarella then ripped a triple to right center for an RBI. Dom Iero followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 2-0 game.
The Flashes and RedHawks will play game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
