KENT, Ohio – Early runs solidified a 5-1 victory for Kent State (33-13, 17-3) as is hosted Miami (20-32, 6-14) Saturday evening.
Since Central Michigan lost earlier in the day at Toledo, Kent State could clinch a regular season conference championship on Sunday with a win. The Golden Flashes hold a three-game lead over the Chippewas and have the tiebreaker.
A four-run first inning secured the win as the Flashes got busy quickly. Luke Burch walked, Mason Mamarella doubled and Dylan Rosa was hit to load the bases with no outs. Dom Iero was also hit to score the first run of the game before Nick Kanavas smacked a two-run double to left field. Zach Schultz made it a 4-0 game when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Kent State's fifth run of the game came in the second when Josh Hollander singled and came home later on a base hit by Rosa.
Miami's only run came on a double and error in the third.
Jared Skolnicki had a strong start, going five innings with six hits, one run, no walks and five strikeouts. Connor Wollersheim was outstanding once again to earn another long-inning save. He threw the final 4.0 frames with two hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
Three of the Flashes' five hits were doubles, as Mamarella, Kanavas and Schultz all had a two-bagger.
The finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. The team's four seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony and all mothers in attendance will also be honored before the game.
