KENT, Ohio – A senior day sweep could not be achieved on Sunday afternoon as Kent State (33-14, 17-4) fell 2-1 to Miami (21-33, 7-14).
Joey Murray pitched an absolute gem, striking out two batters an inning for a new career high with 12 at the end of the day. After 6.0, he had allowed just two hits, one run and two walks, leaving the game in good shape.
The Flashes took a lead in the third when Luke Burch singled up the middle, stole second and scored on a Dylan Rosa double off the wall in center field.
The RedHawks tied the game in the sixth on a solo homerun before scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth on a single, double and another base hit.
Zach Spangler followed Murray in relief, throwing a scoreless frame with one hit. Patrick Dayton followed and suffered the loss. Robert Zeigler was tough in the final 1.2 innings. He did not allow a hit or walk while striking out two and making a nice play to get an out at home plate.
The Flashes were only able to muster four hits on the day, which were sprinkled throughout the lineup. Rosa's double was the only one for extra bases.
Kent State will wrap up its home season on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. game versus Youngstown State. The team will finish the season with a three-game series at Ohio Thursday through Saturday.
