ATHENS, Ohio – Another late comeback fell short on Friday as Kent State (34-16, 17-6) dropped its game with Ohio (27-25, 13-10) by a score of 8-5, despite not giving up an earned run. It is the first series loss this season

The Golden Flashes got ahead 1-0 in the fourth when Nick Kanvas singled, stole a base and scored on a base hit by Dom Iero.

The Bobcats' damage all came in a big seven-run fifth inning, as they had six singles, a homerun and an error in the frame to take a six-run lead, all runs being unearned. They added another in the sixth to make the score 8-1.

Kent State slowly tried to work its way back in the game, as Patrick Ferguson hit a two-run homerun in the eighth and Dylan Rosa had a two-run homerun in the ninth, but it was too little, too late, and the Flashes would fall 8-5.

Joey Murray reached the 100 strikeout mark as he suffered his first loss of the year. He struck out nine in 4.2 innings and did not allow an earned run. Connor Wollersheim followed in relief with two walks and six strikeouts in 2.1 frames, and also did not allow an earned run. Zach Schultz finished the game on the mound with no runs and no hits.

Iero was the only Kent State player to have a multi-hit day as he went 2-for-4 with a double. The team's other eight hits were scattered throughout the lineup.

The series and regular season finale will be Saturday at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes still have a chance to be the outright 2017 Mid-American Conference champions if they win or Central Michigan loses one of its two remaining games.
