AVON, Ohio – The 2017 season came to an end on Saturday as No. 1 Kent State (37-18) fell 7-2 to No. 5 Ohio (30-26) in Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal action.
The Golden Flashes were only able to get three hits on the day.
It was a scoreless game until the third when the Bobcats scored two on a single, two walks and another single. Kent State was able to answer and made it a one-run game in the 5th when Pete Schuler hit a homerun out to right field.
However, Ohio would score one in the sixth, two in the seventh and added two more in the final frame to advance to the championship game.
The Golden Flashes would score their other run of the contest in the seventh when Mason Mamarella walked, advanced on a wild pitch and came home later on an error. They looked like they may stage a rally in the ninth as Mamarella walked and Luke Burch singled to put two on with no outs. After two more outs, another walk would load the bases but the runners were all left stranded to end the game.
Zach Willeman went 5.0 innings in the start, giving up four hits and two runs. Connor Wollersheim threw the next two innings and Zach Schultz filled in the final two frames on the mound.
The 2017 MAC regular season champions end the season's campaign at 37-18.
