Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Purdue 2-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Kent State soccer team fell in its 2017 season opener 2-1 to the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday evening at Folk Field. The match was tied at one at halftime, and the Boilermakers scored the go-ahead goal in the final period.
Purdue got the scoring started off in the 24th minute as Hannah Melchiorre slid a shot into the net from the right flank.
Kent State tied the match at one in the 42nd minute when Mackenzie Lesnick served a corner kick along the goal line and it ricocheted off a Boilermaker and into the net.
It was a physical match in the 2nd period and Purdue netted the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute as Maddy Williams snuck one inside the left post.
Flashes goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald recorded five saves on seven shots on goal.
Both squads tallied seven shots on goal, with Purdue outshooting Kent State 15-10 overall. The Boilermakers also had a slight advantage on corner kicks, 6-5.
Karly Hellstrom, Kristen Brots and Donavan Capehart led the Flashes in shots with two apiece.
Six Golden Flashes' freshmen saw action as Hellstrom and Maddie Holmes made their first collegiate appearance in a starting capacity, while Rachel Ernst, Isabelle Mihail, Cameron Shedenhelm and Kloe Moore came on from the bench.
Kent State returns home to the friendly confines of Dix Stadium for the 2017 home opener on Sunday Aug. 20th with a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Cleveland State.
