THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The No. 14 Kent State University women's golf team finished fourth at the Jim West Challenge Tuesday, carding a three-round score of 8-under par 844.
Following rounds of 275 and 293 Monday, the Golden Flashes finished the tournament with a 8-under par score of 844. Kent State recorded 20 birdies Tuesday, their best mark of the tournament, to move up into fourth for the week. The Flashes were three strokes out of second place.
"We saw a lot of great things that we can build from this week," said head coach Greg Robertson. "We know they can shoot some low scores and make quite a few birdies. Now it's just a matter of putting three solid rounds together. We were prod of the way they bounced back after a tough second round with the low team score in the final round. We're looking forward to a couple of good days of practice before we head to Tennessee."
Pimnipa Panthong finished her third straight round under par with a final-round tally of 1-under par 70. Her overall score of 6-under par 207 placed her eighth overall, seven strokes off the lead. Panthong, last season's national leader in birdies, recorded 12 over 54 holes this week. Michaela Finn finished tied for 16th overall at 2-under par 211. She had her best round of the weekend Tuesday at 4-under par 67, one stroke off her career best.
Marissa Kirkwood and Kory Nielsen both finished tied for 22nd at 1-over par 214. Kirkwood bounced back from her second round by shooting a 67 Tuesday, beating the career-best mark she set in round one. Kory Nielsen shot a 72 in the third round, starting the day off on fire with four birdies in five holes. Kelly Nielsen finished the tournament at 11-over par 224, tied for 52nd. She carded a 75 Tuesday, starting the day with back-to-back birdies.
Kent State will have a quick turnaround for the next tournament, competing in the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate in Knoxville, Tennessee Sept. 18-19.
