
Soccer's Sunday Shutout Secures Sunshine State Split

FORT MYERS, Fla. - ย Kent State (2-3) wrapped up the weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls (3-3) on Sunday, Sept. 3 at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The match was scoreless at halftime, and the Golden Flashes pushed ahead for the go-ahead goal in the final period.
Kent State's Cameron Shedenhelm scored the lone goal of the match in the 63rd minute when she sent a shot through the FAU keeper's legs. Kristen Brots and Isabelle Mihail recorded assists. It is the third goal of the season for Shedenhelm, who leads Kent State in points (6) and it comes a week after her two-goal effort against St. Bonaventure. Mihail tallied her second assist of the year and Brots her first. ย
The Golden Flashes recorded 20 shots, their highest of the year, with nine shots on goal. Kent State controlled the ball for the majority of the second period with 14 of its 20 shots coming in the stanza.
Vital Kats led in shots with four and put two on goal, Karly Hellstrom also recorded three shots with two on goal for the Flashes.
Kent State led Florida Atlantic in corner kicks 6-4 and did not allow any in the second period. The Golden Flashes also held a 20-11 advantage in shots and shots on goal (9-6).
Ashleah McDonald got the start between the pipes and recorded her first shutout on the campaign. She made five saves and moves to 1-2. Florida Atlantic's Jennifer Ocampo made eight saves and is now 3-3.
Paige Culver, Cameron Shedenhelm and Donavan Capehart were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Kent State comes home for a two-match home stand at Dix Stadium next week when it hosts Pittsburgh on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. and Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
