Valiant Comeback Effort Falls Short Against Broncos

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State (8-7-2, 4-4-1 MAC) soccer team scored two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second period but was unable to erase a three-goal halftime deficit in a 4-3 setback to Western Michigan (12-5-0, 6-3-0 MAC) on Thursday at Dix Stadium.

The Golden Flashes struck first when senior Paige Culver sent a free kick near the goal towards a diving sophomore Cameron Shedenhelm, whose defender sent the ball into the net while attempting to prevent Shedenhelm from getting a shot.

Western Michigan answered with four goals in the final 25 minutes of the opening half to take a 4-1 lead.

The Flashes had a response early in the second period, as sophomore Isabelle Mihail gathered a loose ball near the net and beat the WMU keeper in the 52nd minute.

Kent State got within a goal 12 minutes later when sophomore Vital Kats banged a free kick off the crossbar, and it then deflected off of a pursuing WMU defender and into the net.

The Golden Flashes continued to apply pressure on the Broncos defense and had multiple chances to score the equalizer late in the match. The best look came when Cameron Shedenhelm had a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper but her shot sailed high.

Kent State took seven shots in each half and held a 14-12 overall. Cameron Shedenhelm led the team with four shots and Isabelle Mihail had three.

Redshirt freshman Faith O'Neill (6-6-2) made three saves in net.

The Golden Flashes host Northern Illinois in the final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
