
Cleveland State Open Awaits Flashes Saturday

Last Year at CSU Open
Last December, five Golden Flashes earned top six finishes at the 2017 Cleveland State Open, including a 125-pound title by Jake Ferri.ย Isaac Bast placed sixth at 165, going 4-2. Kody Komara reached the six-match limit before the medal round, but went 5-1 at 149.ย Shane Mast went 2-0 at 184, before an injury held him out of action.
Last Time Out
Junior Tim Rooney, who is expected to sit out this Saturday, won a 141-pound title at the Cougar Clash on Dec. 2, in Edwardsville, Illinois.ย Sophomore 174-pounder Dylan Barreiro placed fourth.ย Jake Ferri (125), Cory Simpson (141), Kody Komara (149) and Kade Byland all placed sixth.
Quick Shots
- Junior Tim Rooney was named Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week on Nov. 21, after going 5-1 in a third place finish at the Navy Classic.
- Sophomore Andrew McNally (184) was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 7, after winning a Clarion Open title and going 8-0 in his opening weekend with seven bonus-point victories.
- Senior Isaac Bast (165) and sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) also won titles at the Clarion Open on Nov. 3.
- McNally, Bast and Kody Komara (149) all placed fourth at the Navy Classic.
- The NWCA honored Kent State for having the second highest grade point average in the nation last season at 3.497, trailing only Harvard.
- Freshman Tim Wallace has won a pair of open tournament crowns, competing unattached at 184.ย He's reached the finals three of the four tournaments he's competed in.
- McNally leads the Flashes in wins (14), bonus-point victories (12) and pins (7).
- Bast, the lone active senior on the team, leads the Flashes with 87 career victories.
