
Rooney Wins 133-Pound Crown at Cougar Clash

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Junior Tim Rooney's 133-pound title led a group of five Kent State wrestlers with top six finishes Sunday at the Cougar Clash inside Southern Illinois Edwardsville's Vadalabene Center. Rooney went 3-0 as the Golden Flashes finished sixth in the team standings.
Rooney has placed in the top three of all three tournaments he's competed in this season, but Sunday was his first career tournament championship. In his final bout, he topped Chattanooga's Jake Huffine 5-2. Rooney's closest bout came in the semifinals, a 7-6 decision over Arizona State's Josh Kramer. He improved to 2-0 on the day against the Sun Devils, defeating Josiah Kline 4-2 in his first match.
Sophomore 174-pounder Dylan Barreiro also reached the semifinals and settled for a fourth place. Barreiro topped Chattanooga's Hunter Fortner 8-2 to reach the semis. His 7-3 decision over SIUE's Kevin Gschwendtner, earned Barreiro a spot in the consolation finals.
Redshirt freshman Kody Komara gave Kent State bonus points with a pin and a major decision at 149. Komara was one of four Flashes to place sixth.
Sophomores Kade Byland (165), Cory Simpson (141) and Jake Ferri (125) all placed sixth.
Kent State also saw victories from Tomas Gutierrez (125) and Shane Mast, who wrestled up a weight class at 197.
The Golden Flashes return to action Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Cleveland State Open.
