Kent State rolls up 14 more runs on 18 hits in weekend sweep

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Kent State hit its second grand slam in the season's first six games and scored seven more runs in the late innings to blast Middle Tennessee and run away with a three-game weekend sweep at the Southern Athletic Fields Dirt Classic.

The Golden Flashes again used the big inning to level the opposition, building a 6-0 lead in the fourth and using Tim DalPorto's ninth-inning grand slam to pull away for good, 14-5 over the Blue Raiders. Last weekend, Josh Hollander hit a bases-loaded homer in the ninth inning of the season opener in Texas. Dalporto finished with six RBIs on the weekend after Mason Mamarella did the same in the tournament opener Friday night.

Nick Kanavas (4-6) and Pavin Parks (2-3) also had multi-RBI games for the winners. KSU banged out 18 hits for the second time in the weekend after battering Belmont 17-3 on Friday. With Friday and Saturday's games included, the local nine outscored their Volunteer state opponents 34-9 in 21 innings of weekend baseball.

On the mound, Kent State got superb mound work from starter Jared Skolnicki and a trio of relievers in Zach Schultz, John Mathews and Zach Spangler. The Flashes' arms combined for seven strikeouts on the afternoon. The Blue Raiders managed just seven hits off the Kent State hurlers.

The Golden Flashes head for Rock Hill S.C. for three games against the Winthrop Eagles on March 2-4.
