Golden Flashes win home opener 7-2 over YSU
KENT, Ohio – With winds gusting up to 20 m.p.h. driving wind chill temperatures into the lower 30s, Kent State erased an early 2-0 deficit en route to a 7-2 win over Youngstown State in the 2018 home opener.
Playing an abbreviated seven innings due to the frigid conditions, the Golden Flashes banged out 10 hits and forced the YSU defense into three defensive miscues. Greg Lewandoski, Josh Hollander and Mason Mamarella each had multi-hit performances for KSU. Nick Kanavas added a two-run single.
KSU tossed five different pitchers in the game, each of them working effectively. Eli Kraus worked an inning and two-thirds to pick up his second win of the year. Zach Schultz worked two solid shutout innings and struck out two.
Kent State continued to sparkle defensively, despite the cold conditions. Lewandoski made a nifty skidding stop on an infield grounder and Mamarella took a hit away with a spectacular head-long dive into the left field gap in the seventh. KSU did not commit an error.
The four-game homestand continues Friday when Ball State comes to town to start league play. The first pitch is slated for 4:00.
