Kraus moves into fifth place in school history with win no. 23
TOLEDO, OHIO – Kent State swept its third Mid-American Conference series of the year Sunday when the Golden Flashes raced out to a 12-0 lead before settling for a 13-3 win over Toledo.
The first place Flashes (28-12) kept the pressure on early and often in the game, staking starter Eli Kraus to a 3-0 lead after a half inning on RBIs from Pavin Parks and Nick Elsen. KSU made it 5-0 in the second thanks to a triple from Greg Lewandoski and a single by Reilly Hawkins. And, like Saturday, the Flashes got a run when Tim DalPorto drove in a run when he grounded out, scoring Parks from second on a hustle play.
KSU made it 8-0 in the fourth when Hawkins bunted home a run and Parks brought another in on a double. Pete Schuler then extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth. Kent State scored runs in each of the first five innings. In the game, the Flashes ended up with 17 hits.
Kraus, meanwhile was cruising. He carried a shutout into the eighth and left after the Rockets banged out a bases-clearing double. Kraus fanned seven in the game and tied Bill Underwood for fifth on Kent State's all-time list with his 23rd career victory. Zach Spangler and John Schreiber both pitched well in relief.
Kent State – which keeps a two-game lead for first in the league – has now won 10 straight over Toledo. The win Sunday completes a perfect 4-0 week for the Golden Flashes. They will travel to Wright State on Tuesday before playing host to Walsh on Wednesday night.
