CLEVELAND - Ten Golden Flashes with representation from five of Kent State's winter sports teams were named Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar Athletes by the conference office this week. Faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions voted in 152 student-athletes among eight winter sports (men's & women's basketball, men's & women's indoor track & field, men's & women's swimming & diving, gymnastics, wrestling).
In its fourth year, The Distinguished Scholar Athlete award represents the 'best of the best' who have excelled in athletics and academics. Choosing from the Academic All-MAC Teams announced earlier in the year, the faculty athletic representatives select an elite group.
Kent State led all MAC wrestling teams with four Distinguished Scholar Athletes. Juniors Kyle Conel and Anthony Tutolo earned the honor for the second time, while fifth-year seniors Chance Driscoll and Stephen Suglio claimed their first honor.
Three Flashes on the men's track & field team earned their second career Distinguished Scholar Athlete nod in junior Samory Fraga and sophomores TJ Lawson and Walter Petzel.
Sam Tollerud (women's track & field) earned her third career Distinguished Scholar Athlete accolade.
Also claiming her third Distinguished Scholar Athlete honor was senior Jordan Korinek (women's basketball), a two-time CoSIDAÂ Academic All-American.
Junior Dara Williams (gymnastics) became a two-time selection, giving Kent State eight multi-year honorees among winter sport student-athletes.
