KSU senior leads Flashes into critical MAC series
OXFORD, OHIO – Kent State senior Mason Mamarella received high honors for his work off the field the week he prepares to lead the Golden Flashes into a critical final league series on the field.
Recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team thanks to votes from the sports information directors in the district, Mamarella is hitting well over .300 for the year. He has tallied 31 stolen bases and has compiled a grade point average of 3.67 in his undergraduate studies while boasting a pristine 4.0 in his graduate school program.
Kent State – which knocked off Youngstown State 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon – enters the final weekend of league competition against the Miami RedHawks with a record of 35-14. The Golden Flashes lead the Mid-American Conference by three games and have a magic number of one to clinch the regular season title, a first round tournament bye and home team advantage throughout next week's MAC Tournaments. KSU can clinch its third straight regular season pennant Thursday evening in Oxford.
KSU and Miami have spent most of the nine-week league season running 1-2 in the standings. The RedHawks have lost only one series while Kent has dropped two, but more than made up for it with three sweeps. The two clubs have dynamite starting pitching and equally formidable bullpens.
The series is slated to begin Thursday at 5 p.m. and continue Friday at 4 p.m. and finish on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Golden Flashes will start MAC Pitcher of the Year candidate Joey Murray on Thursday, followed by seniors Jared Skolnicki and Eli Kraus on Friday and Saturday. The 2018 post-season begins on Wednesday for seeds 3-6 and Thursday for the top two seeds.
