STILLWATER, Okla.- The No. 16 Kent State women's golf team has arrived in Stillwater, Okla. With one goal in mind, bring home the 2018 NCAA National Championship.
The Golden Flashes are set to compete from May 18-23 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. The tournament format includes 24 teams competing over the first three rounds of stroke play from Friday to Sunday. The field is reduced to 15 teams for the final round of stroke play Monday, after which the NCAA will crown an individual medalist. On Tuesday, the top-8 teams will compete in match play quarter and semifinals. Finally, the remaining two teams will compete Wednesday for the NCAA National Championship.
All 24 teams in the field competed last week in four separate regional tournaments. Every team finished in the top-6 to earn their spot in the final dance. The field is highlighted by the top-10 teams in the country: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Arkansas, No. 3 UCLA, No.4 Duke, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 Southern California, No. 7 Furman, No.8 Texas, No.9 Arizona, and No. 10 Arizona State. The rest of the field is as follows: No. 12 Florida, No. 13 Northwestern, No. 15 Washington, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 19 Auburn, No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 21 Florida State, No. 25 Louisville, No. 26 Baylor, No. 28 Colorado, No. 27 Virginia, and No. 37 Ohio State.
The Flashes will bring their same five from the regional tournament in Michaela Finn, Pimnipa Panthong, Karoline Stormo, Kory Nielsen, and Chloe Salort. Two out of the five golfers have yet to experience an NCAA National Championship, a first for Nielsen and Salort. However, the lineup is stacked with talent and features three of the top-120 golfers in the country. Panthong stands out as the team's ace, ranking 22nd in the nation and recently being named to the watch list for the ANNIKA Award.
This will be the sixth appearance at the NCAA National Championship for the women's golf team and the second-straight year as Kent State advanced all the way to the Quarterfinals last-season.
Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament, while live coverage of the final round of stroke play and all rounds of match play will be televised live on Golf Channel. Be sure to follow @KentStWGolf for tournament action.
