Bats come to life in 12-3 win over Cavaliers

KENT, OHIO – Kent State took advantage of some warm spring weather and home cooking to blast past visiting Walsh Wednesday night, 12-3 in the opening game of a seven-game homestand.

Trailing early 2-0, the Golden Flashes tied it in the first then quickly took the lead for good with single runs in the second and third. The hosts blew the game open with a six-run fourth. Brad Hamilton's team-best ninth home run gave the Flashes some additional breathing room.

In all, the Flashes banged out 17 hits and did not commit an error. Reilly Hawkins, Nick Kanavas, Pavin Parks, Nick Elsen, Tim DalPorto, Josh Hollander and Hamilton all had multi-hit games for KSU. DalPorto drove in four runs for the victorious Flashes.

On the mound, Kent State used four arms and they all pitched well. Zach Schultz started for Kent and worked four innings, striking out five. Chris Martin, Robert Zeigler and Austin Havekost combined to toss the final five frames, allowing just one run and striking out four.

KSU continues the home stretch with a weekend series against Bowling Green. With a magic number of eight, Kent State leads the MAC with a 13-5 record. First pitch on Friday is 6 p.m.
