KENT, Ohio — The Kent State softball team will enter this week's Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed after falling to Akron, 15-5, in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at the Diamond at Dix. The Golden Flashes captured their third tournament crown as the No. 4 seed a year ago.

Kent State clubbed three home runs to match its season-high. Hunter Brancifort put Kent State on the board with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Jade Williams and Alexis Taube added back-to-back solo shots to start the next frame, the first career long ball for both players.

The Flashes plated a pair of two-out runs in the sixth to prevent the game from ending early. Brancifort collected her second hit of the day and scored after a ball hit to center field by Breanna Westover was misplayed. Kaitlyn Miller then sent a sharply-hit ball to the left side that the shortstop was unable to come up with, allowing pinch runner Vanessa Vodan to cross the plate.

After being shutout in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, the Zips tallied season-bests with 15 runs on 12 hits.

Kent State will play fifth-seeded Western Michigan in the opening game of the MAC Tournament on Wednesday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron. The Flashes took two of three games from the Broncos to open the conference season.
