BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth affair under the lights at UB Stadium, Kent State (4-6-2, 2-2-1 MAC) came up just short against Buffalo (5-6-1, 2-3-0 MAC), 3-2, on Thursday night. The Bulls netted the game-winner in the 85th minute, just 37 seconds after KSU scored the then-equalizer. Junior Cameron Shedenhelm highlighted the Golden Flashes offensive effort, scoring both goals in the second period.
Buffalo wasted no time and got on the scoreboard just two minutes into the contest on a Marcy Barberic goal. The Bulls took a one-goal lead into the intermission, and the second stanza began with both teams unable to score. An offensive explosion ensued in the final 23 minutes of the match, as both teams combined for four goals.
Shedenhelm scored the first of her two goals in the 67th minute and lined a shot into the low left corner of the net off an assist from junior Vital Kats. The Bulls responded in the 78th minute as Barberic earned a penalty kick and netted her second goal of the night to give the Bulls the lead, 2-1.
In the 84th minute, Shedenhelm struck again and scored via a header on a free kick assist from Kats to even the score, 2-2. The duo of Shedenhelm and Kats have teamed up to score each of Kent State's last five goals.
A mere 37 seconds later, UB earned a free kick on a KSU yellow card, and scored the game-winner off the foot of Tess Ford. Gurjeena Jandu recorded the assist as her shot ricocheted off Kent State redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Faith O'Neill and was cleaned up by Ford.
Shedenhelm took the team-lead in points (15) with the second two-goal match of her career, and the first since 2017 at St. Bonaventure. Kats has flourished in Mid-American Conference play and has collected a point in each of the last six contests. Her second assist of the night was the 18th of her career and she climbed the career leaderboard to tie Megan Repas (2009-12) for the fourth most assists in a career.
O'Neill (4-6-2) made a career-high eight saves between the pipes. Buffalo's Emily Kelly (5-6-1) recorded nine stops.
Kent State led Buffalo in shots (20-15) and were even in shots on goal (11-11).
MAC play continues for Kent State this weekend when it returns home to Dix Stadium on Sunday, October 13th at 1 p.m. for a Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge bout against Akron.
