MEDINAH, Ill.- The Kent State women's golf team held on for its third-consecutive tournament win of the season as they took home the championship at the Illini Invitational on Tuesday with an 11-under 853.
"Medinah was a great test of mental toughness and discipline today," said head coach Lisa Strom. "This was our first big test coming down the stretch this season and the team responded beautifully. Winning is never easy, but winning by one shot goes to show you how each shot matters. Hats off to Ole Miss for their fantastic round today, they vaulted up the board and we knew it was coming down to the wire"
Ole Miss finished 1-shot behind the Flashes while Illinois rounded out the third-place spot at 4-under.
Senior Pimnipa Panthong led the Flashes as she finished tied for fifth at 5-under 211 for the tournament. In her final round, Panthong went 17 holes for par or better and carded three birdies. Panthong led the tournament with 45 pars.
Senior Karoline Stormo fired a 1-over 73 score in her final round and finished tied for 11th at 3-under 213. Stormo led the tournament in par-4 scoring at 3.73 (-8).
Freshman Caley McGinty, junior Chloe Salort, and sophomore Thitapa Pakdeesettakul all finished tied for 15th at 1-under 215. McGinty played her best round of golf in the final round after she shot a 3-under 69. She carded five birdies on the day including a clutch putt for birdie on her final hole. Salort mirrored her first-round score of 2-over 74, while Pakdeesettakul ended the day with a 3-over 75.
Junior Kory Nielsen rounded out the Flashes' lineup and finished tied for 50th at 8-over 224.
As a team, Kent State led the field in par-4 scoring (-9) and with 189 total pars.
"To be undefeated so far this season, I give all the credit to this group of young women. I'm so proud of how this team gutted it out and got the win. They have what it takes to be the best and each day we keep striving to be a little better than the day before. We are going to enjoy this tonight, rest up tomorrow, and hit the road again on Thursday."
The Flashes have a quick turnaround as they are back in action this weekend, Oct. 12-13, as they compete in the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, Texas.
