Golden Flashes Defeat All Mid-Major Programs in Canadian Collegiate with 5th Place Finish

AURORA, Ontario – The Kent State Dr. Paula Treckel Women's Golf team finished in 5^th place in the Canadian Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, leading all mid-major programs in the tournament and notching the team's first top-five finish of the season.

Although power conference programs Virginia, Auburn, UCLA and Tennessee got the better of Kent State, the Golden Flashes were able to eclipse all mid-major programs in the event (South Florida, UNCW, UTSA, British Columbia) by a wide margin. KSU also fought hard with the power conferences teams that eventually finished ahead of them, leading over Auburn after the first round and UCLA heading into the final round.

Kent State's first round was an immaculate +6 for the team's final score. Isabella Goyette, Aryn Matthews and Veronika Kedronova each shot just one stroke over par for the round. Matthews in particular had a blazing start with four birdies in the opening round alone. Matthews finished the event in 15^th place with a +9 final on the scorecard.

The team leader for Kent State was Isabella Goyette with a 6^th place finish and a +3 final score. Goyette placed just outside of the top-10 last week in West Lafayette and continued her success this week with the best individual three-round performance of the team's young season. Goyette's second round was very strong with four birdies and one stroke under par for her round total.

Petra Babicova had a massive improvement this week, going from finishing at the bottom of the Purdue tournament to placing comfortably in the top half of the individual rankings with a +12 final score.

Meanwhile, individuals Vicky Huang and Alexa Prettyman each competed in the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State over the weekend. Huang had a solid debut for the Golden Flashes, finishing in 38^th place out of 81 golfers with a +14 two-round score. Huang had two birdies in the event, including a 562-yard hole, which was her second collegiate hole ever played. Prettyman finished tied for 66^th in the event, but tallied four birdies.

The team that won the Canadian Collegiate was Virginia. The ACC powerhouse got a big lead early with a -2 first round and an absurd -7 second round. A decent +10 third round put their final barely above par. Individually, the co-tournament champion, Jaclyn LaHa, as well as the 3^rd and 4^th place finishers, all golfed for the Cavaliers.

The Golden Flashes travel to Fayetteville, Ark. in two weeks to compete in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational from Oct. 3 through Oct. 5. The competition will start a packed month of October for Kent State as they play three tournaments in four weeks.
