WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Kent State Dr. Paula Treckel Women's Golf team finished tied for 8th place out of 18 teams in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C on Sunday afternoon.
Not only was the Landfall Tradition's course objectively one of the toughest Kent State has had to play on so far this season, but the competition level was also elite. Every team - including Kent State - were in the top-50 in the national polls coming into the weekend, with the only exceptions being host school UNCW, East Carolina and Clemson. Within those 15 teams, seven of them were ranked in the top-25 and four of them were top-10 ranked teams in the nation.
Kent State finished tied with host school UNCW and No. 2-ranked Auburn in the final tournament's standings, while placing better than six top-50 teams, including No. 19-ranked Alabama. The Landfall Tradition proved once again that Kent State Women's Golf can compete with anyone in the country. The 8th-place finish should give the squad some momentum going into their winter break, before the spring season starts at the very end of January.
Gracie Larsen picked up right where she left off in the beginning of the fall season, once again leading the team with a six-over-par performance. The junior from Melbourne, Australia shot good enough for a share of 17th place out of the massive 96-golfer field.
Larsen was followed up by last year's Landfall Tradition individual champion, Veronika Kedronova. The senior from the Czech Republic shot a 227 over the 54-hole event to place just inside the top half of the tournament's golfers with a 41st-place performance.
Elsewhere in the tournament, 6th-ranked Duke won the event by eight strokes over national poll-leading Wake Forest and 7th-ranked South Carolina. The Blue Devils' Rianne Malixi conquered the course with by far the lowest score in the event with a -12. Wake Forest's Macy Pate finished in second place with a -3 for the only other below par performance of the weekend. Kentucky's Cathryn Brown and South Carolina's Eila Gatlisky each shot an even par to tie for third place.
