Flashes Set for Home Opener at Schoonover Stadium

KENT, Ohio –The Kent State University baseball team (4-10) is set to host Youngstown State (0-13) in its home opener at Schoonover Stadium Tuesday at 4 p.m.Â
The Flashes are coming off a three-game losing streak after getting swept by West Virginia in Morgantown over the weekend.Â
Last time out, the Flashes dropped a three-game series to West Virginia in Morgantown, W.V. The Flashes collected 27 hits on the weekend with four home runs, a triple and 13 walks.Â
Sophomore Nick Elsen was explosive at the plate in Morgantown, hitting at a .462 clip with a 1.154 slugging percentage. He collected six hits, including a double, a triple and two home runs. The Kenosha, Wis. native launched two shots over the left field wall in the series finale Sunday, including a two-run home run clobbered 390 feet to the road beyond Monongalia County Ballpark. Scoring five runs and and tallying four RBIs, Elsen accounted for nine of Kent State's 13 total runs for the weekend.Â
On the season, redshirt sophomore Ben Carew leads the Kent State offense, batting .318 with 14 hits, seven RBIs, six runs scored and six stolen bases. Senior Pete Schuler has added 13 hits on the season with six RBIs. Elsen's three home runs on the season leads the team, while junior Patrick Ferguson has clubbed two home runs including one against West Virginia on Saturday.
Youngstown State
Youngstown State will enter Tuesday's matchup 0-13 on the season dropping a four-game series at Miami over the weekend. The Penguins opened the 2019 slate with a three-game series at No. 9 Mississippi State and No. 6 Florida State.
The Penguins offense has only been shut out once this season – in an 8-0 loss at Mississippi State opening weekend. YSU has notched 66 hits through the first 13 games of the season, taking 45 walks.
The Youngstown State pitching staff has held opponents to a .337 batting average. The battery has allowed 147 hits and 57 extra-base hits, including 16 home runs.
Tuesday will mark the 93rd time the two programs will meet, with the Flashes leading the all-time series 70-21. In the last meeting in May 2018, the Flashes topped the Penguins 5-1.
