AKRON, Ohio – Kent State scored the first 11 points during the overtime period and left James A. Rhodes Arena with a 65-55 victory on Wednesday night. The Golden Flashes have now swept the season series and earned a full point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge standings twice under third-year head coach Todd Starkey.
Senior Merissa Barber-Smith had a monster night inside in her final rivalry contest. Barber-Smith had a career-high 18 rebounds to go with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting and three blocks in a career-high 33 minutes played.
Kent State (17-11, 10-7 MAC) had four score in double-figures. Redshirt junior Megan Carter paced the Flashes with a game-high 19 points. Freshman Lindsey Thall had 13 points, which included a huge putback in the final minute of regulation and a dagger three-pointer late in overtime. Junior Ali Poole added 10 points.
Senior Alexa Golden played all 45 minutes and finished with eight rebounds and four steals. Golden's rugged effort on the defensive end was key in limiting high-scoring Akron guard Megan Sefcik to a 2-for-9 shooting night from behind the three-point line.
The Flashes will host Buffalo on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. for the final regular season home game. Seniors Merissa Barber-Smith and Alexa Golden will be honored prior to tip-off.
