Golden Flashes Prepare for a Pair of Midweek Games

KENT, Ohio –The Kent State University baseball team (10-14, 1-3 MAC) will face Malone (18-10, 8-4 GMAC) and Youngstown State (4-23, 2-8 Horizon) for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2-3 between Mid-American Conference weekend series. The Flashes will return to Schoonover Stadium to host Malone on Tuesday, April 2 at 4 p.m. before wandering down the road to play at Youngstown State on Wednesday, April 3 at 5 p.m.
The Flashes are coming off a week-long road trip that was originally scheduled for five games, however inclement weather in Muncie, Ind. canceled the final two games against Ball State. The Flashes fell to Dayton on Tuesday and then played a pair of thrilling extra-inning games, defeating Indiana 9-8 on Wednesday in 12 innings and falling to Ball State 9-8 on Friday in 13 innings.
With its win over Indiana, the Flashes moved to 4-0 against Big Ten opponents and snapped the Hoosiers' eight-game winning streak. Senior Pavin Parks, named MAC Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon, was instrumental in the victory and recorded the win on the mound, closing out the game with 4.2 innings of work and eight strikeouts. The Uniontown, Ohio native stepped to the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning and closed the door on the Hoosiers to hold the tie and force extra innings before eventually picking up the win in the 12thinning. Starting the game at second base and hitting clean-up, Parks scored three runs (including the winning run), hitting in a run and walking twice.
Malone
Malone is currently on an eight-game winning streak and will face Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Lake Erie for a doubleheader Monday night before traveling to Kent on Tuesday.
Heading into the doubleheader against Lake Erie, the Pioneers are currently in second in the GMAC, behind only Ohio Dominican. Malone has not been shut out this season, totaling 168 runs in 28 games and hitting 14 home runs.
The Malone pitching staff has held its opponents to a .248 average, striking out 226 batters on the year and maintaining a 3.43 ERA.
Tuesday will mark the seventh time Kent State and Malone will meet, with the Flashes leading the all-time series, 6-0. The teams last met in April 2014, when the Flashes held onto a 7-6 victory at Schoonover Stadium.
Youngstown State
The Flashes and Penguins will complete their home-and-home series at Eastwood Field in Youngstown, Ohio. Kent State defeated YSU 10-5 in its home opener March 12.
Youngstown State will enter the game 4-23, earning a home-and-home series sweep over Pitt and picking up a win against Wright State since it last played Kent State.
The YSU offense has recorded 173 hits this season, including 11 home runs and 32 doubles. As a team, the Penguins have a .200 batting average and .282 slugging percentage.
On the season, the Penguins pitching staff has an 8.57 ERA, striking out 155 while walking 156.
Next up, the Flashes will host Western Michigan for a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday, April 5-7 at Schoonover Stadium.
