Kent State Women’s Golf team secures 21st-straight MAC Championship
NOBLESVILLE, Ind.- The Kent State women's golf team won its 21st-straight Mid-American Conference Championship, tallying a season-best final-round 274 Sunday at Purgatory Golf Club. Junior Karoline was crowned tournament champion after a tournament total of 5-under 211.
At 7-under for the tournament (305-278-274), the Golden Flashes won by 18 strokes over second place Toledo and 39 shots over third place Northern Illinois. The Golden Flashes, who have won every championship tournament put on by the MAC, had all scorers finish in the top-5.
Junior Karoline Stormo set a single-round MAC Championship record with her 7-under 65 score. The previous mark (67), was set by Stormo and Pimnipa Panthong in 2018. Stormo's 65 score is a career best for the junior as she went 17 holes for par or better with six birdies and an eagle on the No. 18 hole. She also completed the final nine holes bogey-free. Stormo carded a final round score of 2-under 70 and finished with a 54 hole total of 5-under 211.
Sophomore Chloe Salort posted a second-round total of 3-under 69 and finished the final round with a 1-under 71. In her second round, Salort went 17 holes for par or better with three birdies and completed the final round with four birdies. For the tournament, Salort placed third at 1-under 216.
Freshman Thitapa Pakdeesettakul placed fourth overall at 1-over 217. The freshman carded a second round score of 2-over 74 and fired a career-best 5-under 67. In her final round, Pakdeesettakul went 16 holes for par or better with a team-high seven birdies. She led the tournament with 13 total birdies.
Teammates Michaela Finn and Pimnipa Panthong both tied for fifth at 3-over 219. Finn completed rounds of 71 and 70, while Panthong fired rounds 73 and 67. Panthong played a bogey-free final round with five birdies.
Kent State led the tournament with 53 birdies as well as leading in par-4 and par-5 scoring.
After the tournament, Kent State would bring home several pieces of hardware. Stormo headlined postseason award winners as the 2019 MAC Golfer of the Year and named to the First Team All-MAC. For the third-straight year, head coach Greg Robertson won Coach of the Year honors, his fourth award in five seasons. Finn, Panthong, and Salort joined Stormo to make up three of the five members of the All-MAC First Team. Pakdeesetakul and Kory Nielsen were named to the All-MAC Second Team. Pakdeesetakul also was named Freshman of the Year.
The Flashes will move on to the NCAA Regional Tournament May 6-8. The NCAA Women's Golf selection show will air Wednesday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m. ET on GolfChannel. The four regional sites are the Saugahatchee Country Club (Opelika, Alabama), Tumble Creek Golf Club (Cle Elum, Washington), Forest Akers Golf Courses-West (East Lansing, Michigan) and Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Oklahoma).
