ATHENS, Ohio – First inning damage decided the game as the Kent State University baseball team (21-20, 9-7 MAC) dropped a 1-0 pitchers' duel to Ohio University (15-26, 9-9 MAC) and settled for a 2-1 Mid-American Conference series victory at Bob Wren Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Junior Zach Schultz (1-4) made his fourth start of the season, recording six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work while allowing three hits. Freshman Luke Albright complimented him out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit in 3.1 innings of work and striking out two.
Kent State's six-game streak with 10 or more runs was snapped as the Flashes were shut out for the second time this season. Sophomore Michael Turner led the offense, accounting for three of Kent State's seven hits on the day. Freshman Collin Mathews notched two singles while redshirt sophomore Ben Carew and senior Kian O'Brien each added a hit apiece in the loss.
The action came in the first inning as Kent State threatened by loading the bases but came up empty. The Bobcats responded by manufacturing a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning.
The Flashes managed to put just three more runners in scoring position on the day, totaling nine men stranded on base.
The Flashes will return to Schoonover Stadium for a four-game homestand, starting with Dayton on Tuesday, April 30 at 6 p.m.
