YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio– The Kent State University baseball team (11-15, 1-3 MAC) dropped a 4-3 extra-inning battle to Youngstown State (5-23, 2-7 Horizon) at Eastwood Field Wednesday evening. Redshirt sophomore Ben Carew led the Kent State offense, going 4-for-5 with a run and a walk on the day.
The Flashes fell behind 1-0 early as the Penguins tallied a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning and the score remained until the top of the fourth inning, when the Flashes took a 2-1 lead. Senior Pete Schuler drew a walk to lead off the inning and freshman Justin Kirby followed with a single through the left side. Senior Pavin Parks loaded the bases with a walk before Schuler scored on a wild pitch. Senior Kian O'Brien re-loaded the bases with the third walk of the inning and senior Josh Hollander recorded a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kirby.
The Penguins responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to knot the game back at 2-2.
Kent State regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Carew legged out a triple to start the inning and eventually scored on an RBI-single from Schuler.
The Flashes looked to walk away with the victory until the bottom of the ninth, however the Penguins tied the ballgame on three hits to force extra innings before eventually scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a wild pitch.
The Kent State offense totaled nine hits and five walks in the loss, stranding 11 runners on base. Carew led with four hits, while junior Alex Ronnebaum collected a pair of walks.

Redshirt sophomore Trevor Pittman recorded six punchouts in 3.0 innings of relief, while redshirt sophomore Peyton Deats and senior Pavin Parks also made appearances on the mound as the pitching staff fanned a total of 16 batters on the day.
