Kent State’s Bats Quieted in Loss to Western Michigan

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University baseball team (12-16) fell to 2-4 in Mid-American Conference play, dropping the second game of the series 11-1 to Western Michigan (8-19, 2-4 MAC) Saturday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium. The Flashes offense was quieted to just five hits on the day after tallying 12 hits a day ago.

Senior Josh Hollander led the Kent State offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Seniors Kian O'Brien and Pavin Parks and redshirt sophomore Ben Carew each added hits on the day, while junior Alex Ronnebaum picked up the lone RBI of the game.

Western Michigan dominated offensively collecting twelve hits, seven walks and three hit by pitches on the day. The Broncos jumped out to a five run lead through the first four innings before the Flashes tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Michael Turner led off the frame with a walk, and Parks added a single through the right side before O'Brien laid down a bunt-single to load the bases. Ronnebaum followed with an RBI-grounder to score Kent State's only run of the day.

The Broncos went on to add six runs in the top of the ninth to walk away with an 11-1 victory.

Junior John Matthews (3-5) made his eighth start of the season on the mound for the Flashes, suffering the loss with 5.1 innings pitched and six strikeouts. Redshirt sophomore Peyton Deats tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, recording three strikeouts, and redshirt senior Chris Martin and freshman Max Rippl closed out the game, combining for 1.1 innings of work out of the bull pen.

The Flashes will close out the series at Schoonover Stadium on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
