Golden Flashes Head North to Canisius

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University baseball team (13-16, 3-4 MAC) is set to travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face the Golden Griffins of Canisius College (13-17, 7-2 MAAC) Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
The Flashes are coming off their first Mid-American Conference series win over Western Michigan. Head Coach Jeff Duncan tallied his 200th career win in the series opener as the Flashes powered past the Broncos with 12 hits and two home runs. The bats were quieted on Saturday as the Flashes dropped the second game, but bounced back to collect a season-high 17 hits in a 15-3 win to claim the series.
Senior Kian O'Brien was named the MAC Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The Madison, Wis. native was a constant offensive threat, posting a .471 average and .882 slugging percentage through five games last week. O'Brien crushed two home runs and a double, recording seven RBIs and six runs scored. He also drew four walks and was plunked twice to record a .609 on-base percentage on the week.
Canisius College
Canisius College will enter Tuesday's game 13-17 overall and 7-2 in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Golden Griffins are tied for first in the MAAC with Quinnipiac after winning the series 2-1 over the Bobcats last weekend.
Canisius has averaged more than five runs and eight hits per game this season and has knocked 75 extra-base hits during the 2019 slate. The Griffins have posted a .256 team batting average, drawing 120 walks and 36 hit batters. Canisius has also swiped 35 bases in 47 attempts.
The Golden Griffins pitching staff has combined for a 5.98 ERA, spinning one shut out on the season – a 9-0 win at Niagara March 27. The battery has fanned 225 batters while walking 141 and allowing 28 home runs.
Tuesday will mark the seventh time the two programs have met with the Flashes leading the all-time series 5-1. The teams met a year ago for a home-and-home series. The Flashes won both games, 13-11 and 10-1 respectively.
