Kent State Stumbles at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. –The Kent State University baseball team (13-17, 3-4 MAC) was held to just four hits in a 13-2 road loss to Canisius (14-17, 7-2 MAAC). Senior Kian O'Brien highlighted the Kent State offense, launching his fifth home run of the season in the top of the seventh, his third long ball in the past four games.
The Golden Griffins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, knocking the first two pitches they saw out of the park.
The Flashes got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning to cut into the deficit. Redshirt sophomore Ben Carew led off the inning with Kent State's first hit of the game, a double down the left field line. Sophomore Michael Turner followed with a single rocketed to right field, scoring Carew.
The Golden Griffins put up four runs both the fourth and fifth innings and tacked on three additional runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 13-1.
O'Brien ripped a solo shot to straightaway center field to lead off the seventh inning and bring the final score to 13-2.
Junior Zach Schultz (1-3) started on the mound for the Flashes, suffering the loss with two runs scored in 2.0 innings of work. Sophomore Jack Zimmerman, redshirt sophomore Tyler Drabick, freshman Max Rippl and redshirt senior Chris Martin each made appearances in relief. Redshirt sophomore Jarrett Smetana made his first career appearance on the mound to close the game, striking out the only batter he faced. The staff combined to allow 14 hits and eight earned runs on the day, striking out 11.
The Flashes will return to Schoonover Stadium to continue Mid-American Conference play, hosting Central Michigan Friday through Sunday, April 12-14.
