Flashes Fall Short in Late Comeback

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University baseball team (27-22, 14-8 MAC) dropped a 7-5 contest to Wright State (38-15, 19-8 Horizon) in its final game at Schoonover Stadium for the 2019 season. The Flashes rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell short in the late-inning comeback.
The Flashes notched eight hits on the night with two going for extra bases. Junior Cam Touchette led the offense, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run. Sophomore Michael Turner also recorded his 13th multi-hit game of the season, belting a pair of singles.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Carew reached base in four of his five plate appearances and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. He has now reached safely in each of the last 30 games.
The Flashes fell behind early in the first inning and never gained a lead in the game. The Raiders managed a run in the top of the first inning, utilizing two walks, a double steal and a sacrifice fly.
The Raiders extended their lead to 3-0 an inning later, stringing together three hits and a Kent State error.
Kent State loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and Carew scored its first run of the night on a wild pitch.
The score remained 3-1 until the top of the sixth inning, when the Raiders added three runs. Wright State again drew a walk, notched a pair of hits and capitalized on a Kent State error to bring the score to 6-1.
The Flashes began a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, plating four runs. Senior Josh Hollander led off with a single to right field and redshirt sophomore Alex Ronnebaum followed with a double to center field, forcing Wright State's first pitching change of the night. Freshman Justin Kirby scored Hollander, taking advantage of a fielding error by the Wright State shortstop. A batter later, Touchette laced a two-run triple to right-center field, his second of the season. Senior Kian O'Brien scored Touchette on a ground ball to shortstop to bring the Flashes within one run, but the Flashes would not score the rest of the game.
The Raiders managed a final run in the top of the eighth to walk away with a 7-5 victory.
Redshirt freshman Peyton Deats (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, starting on the mound for the Blue and Gold. He allowed just one earned run in 2.0 innings of work. Redshirt freshman Trevor Pittman tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, striking out three. Redshirt seniors Chris Martin and John Schreiber, freshman Max Rippl and senior Pavin Parks each appeared out of the bullpen, combining for six strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed in 5.0 innings.
Next up, the Flashes will close out the regular season on the road, traveling to Eastern Michigan for a three-game Mid-American Conference set Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18.
