MUNCIE, Ind. – Third-place finishes by Grace Tennant and Maria Horrigan highlighted performances by the Kent State women's track and field team on the first day of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.
The duo accounted for 11.5 of the team's 15.5 points, as the Golden Flashes sit fifth in the standings through four event finals.
"We had solid efforts from our women to put us in a good spot after the first day," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Bill Lawson. "I was really impressed by Grace Tennant with her three-meter PR to get third in the javelin. It was just a fantastic competitive effort by Grace. Maria Horrigan getting third in the pole vault was big for us. Maddie Dunlap was able to finish a couple of spots better than her seed in the 10K, so it was a super effort from her."
Competing in the javelin throw for the second time this season, Grace Tennant set a new personal-best for the second week in a row with a toss of 148'-6" on her first attempt of the day.
Maria Horrigan tied for third in the pole vault with a top height of 12'-2.50". Christy Nell and Ally Thompson each cleared the bar at 11'-8.50" for ninth and 11th place, respectively.
Maddie Dunlap took fifth in the 10K, crossing the finish line in 36:26.07 in her MAC Outdoor Championships debut.
Sami Ice scored 2,415 on the opening day of her first heptathlon and sits in 14th-place entering the final three events on Friday. Ice's highest-scoring event was the 100-meter hurdles, earning 684 points with a time of 16.25.
Nicole Yeargin advanced to the 200-meter dash final on Saturday with a prelims time of 24.20.
The second day of the MAC Championships is scheduled to resume Friday at 12 p.m. with the heptathlon (long jump). The shot put gets field events started at 3:30 p.m. with the rest of the running prelims slated for a 4:45 p.m. start.
