KENT, Ohio- Former Kent State golf star Corey Conners will be competing this week, Aug. 22-25 in the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta, Ga.
Conners had an impressive finish at the BMW Championship on Sunday at 15-under 273 and tied for seventh. At tied for seventh, Conners was the low scoring Canadian at the event and is now 23rd in the FedEx Cup rankings. He was the only Canadian to advance to the Tour Championship and is the first Canadian to play in the Tour Championship since Adam Hadwin in 2017.
After starting the season with only a partial PGA Tour card, Conners has now earned a spot in all four majors next season, the World Golf Championships, and as well as a full tour card for 2020.
Conners made headlines earlier this season when he became the third former Kent State player to win on the PGA Tour when he fired a final round of 6-under 66 to capture the Valero Texas Open on Sunday, April 7. He became the first player on Tour since Arjun Atwal in 2010 to Monday qualify and then win that event. Conners joined Mackenzie Hughes and Ben Curtis as former Golden Flashes with PGA Tour wins. Curtis won the Valero Texas Open in 2012.
For the Tour Championship, a new modified scoring system gives it a type of staggered start. The leader in the FedEx Cup standings, Justin Thomas, starts the tournament at 10 under. The rest of the field receives fewer strokes, with Conners getting just a single one, nine shots back of the leader.
Championship action begins Thursday as Conners will tee off at 12:15 from the No. 1 tee and will be paired with Sungjae Im.
