KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The Kent State University women's golf team won its second-straight tournament of the 2019-2020 season on Tuesday with a five-stroke victory at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate.
"Winning doesn't happen all the time in college golf," said head coach Lisa Strom. "We will certainly enjoy this for a few days and get back to work after a little rest. The climb is all about the journey we're on together. We're getting comfortable being around each other and keep pushing each other to be the best versions of ourselves. When you execute at an elite level like this team does, and enjoy doing it together, that's where the magic happens."
The win marks the third time the Flashes have won at the Mercedes-Benz in the 23 seasons the tournament has been played. Kent State previously took home the team title last season.
Kent State (276-279-275/830) finished at 22-under par, five shots ahead of second-place Charlotte (281-278-276/835), while LSU (291-285-276/859) finished third at 7-over.
Seniors Karoline Stormo (69-68-68) and Pimnipa Panthong (67-69-69) led the tournament after both finished 8-under 205. After a one-hole playoff, Stormo defeated Panthong to win the individual title.
"What a week of tremendous play from our seniors Karoline and Pim. To see them battle it out through the playoff was something special."
Stormo finished the final round with a 3-under 68 after she carded four birdies and an eagle while Panthong carded a 2-under score after going 17 holes for par or better with three birdies.
Caley McGinty finished tied for fourth at 5-under 208 for the tournament after she finished the day with a 3-under 68 score. McGinty went 16 holes for par or better consisting of three birdies and an eagle.
"Caley came through clutch yet again. I'm excited for her to go about her business and notch another top-5."
Kory Nielsen tied for 16th with a 2-over 215 score after she carded a 1-under 70 third-round score, while Chloe Salort finished tied for 43rd at 10-over 223. She posted a 6-over for the third round.
"Kory and Chloe helped the team in a big way this week as well. Kory has turned a corner with her game and its moving in a great direction."
The Flashes return to action Oct. 7-Oct. 8 when they compete in the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah in Illinois.
