Flashes Erase Three-Goal Deficit in MAC Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In its first Mid-American Conference match of the year, Kent State (2-4-2, 0-0-1 MAC) earned a point with a double overtime, 3-3, tie against Western Michigan (2-5-1, 0-0-1 MAC) at the WMU Soccer Complex Saturday morning. The Golden Flashes showed resiliency and overcame a three-goal deficit and scored all of their goals in just 21 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore Karly Hellstrom sparked the Kent State offense in the 58th minute and scored her third goal of the year on a penalty kick. It electrified the offensive attack as the Flashes came right back to score in the 65th minute. Junior Vital Kats netted her first goal of the year on an assist from freshman Anna Campanella.
KSU tied the match up in the 79th minute as junior Maddie Holmes scored her second of the year and was assisted by Hellstrom.
Kent State registered 19 shots and placed 11 on target, while the Broncos had 14 shots with eight on goal. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Faith O'Neill made four saves between the pipes and the Flashes were credited with one team save.
The MAC opener in Kalamazoo was originally scheduled for Friday, September 27th, but was moved to Saturday due to lightning in the area.
The Flashes first MAC road trip of the year continues tomorrow, Sunday, September 28th, at 2 p.m. EST / 1 p.m. CST at Northern Illinois.
