Rooney Grabs Two MAC Awards

KENT, OHIO- Fifth-year senior Tim Rooney took home a pair of weekly awards, taking home the MAC West Division Wrester of the Week as well as the Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Rooney went 5-0 last week against SIU-E in a MAC dual and the 40th annual Virginia Duals. Rooney started the week with a 12-6 win over Jake Blaha to help the Golden Flashes win their first MAC dual of the season. He continued his winning ways with an impressive 3-1 win over Louie Hayes of Virginia in the opening match of the Virginia Duals. Hayes came in as a top-20 wrestler in several rankings at 133 pounds. The fifth-year senior then earned his first fall of the year, pinning Carmen Ferrante as part of the Kent State victory over Penn. On the final day of the Duals, Rooney defeated King Sandoval of Maryland and Gary Joint of Fresno State.  The 5-0 week moved Rooney to 18-8 on the season.
Rooney also captured the Mid-American Conference's male Scholar Athlete of the Week. Rooney was chosen over other winter sport athletes. Rooney, an exercise science major, owns a GPA of 3.813.
The Flashes return home for a pair of MAC duals this weekend. Kent State hosts Ohio on Friday night at 7 and Missouri at noon.
