PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif- The No. 3 Kent State women's golf team finished the Northrop Grumman Regional in sixth place with a three-round score of 868 (+16). Kent State's third-round score of 285 (+1) was its lowest of the tournament.
"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach Lisa Strom. "They showed up for the final round ready to go. We put some birdies on the board and started climbing early. This field is as tough as a national championship and the top-8 make it to match play, so this is encouraging since we were not at our best this week."
Junior Kory Nielsen led the way for the Flashes with a 54-hole score of 218 (+5), tying for 23rd. Nielsen finished the final round with a 78 (+7). Her -1 score on par-3 holes was the fifth-lowest in the tournament.
Senior Karoline Stormo, junior Chloe Salort, and freshman Caley McGinty all tied for 36th at 221 (+8). Stormo carded her lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday after she fired a 71 (E) with four birdies. Salort also shot her best on in the third round after going 16 holes for par or better with a 71 (E). McGinty carded the lowest round for Kent State in the third round with a 69 (-2) with the help of five birdies.
"I'm proud of Kory. She did a great job all week long and gave us exactly what we needed out of her. Caley really bounced back from Round 2 and showed why she is a top freshman in the country. Her birdie on her last hole put us into solo 6th."
Senior Pimnipa finished the tournament tied for 49th at 224 (+11). Panthong fired a 74 (+3) for the final round.
The Flashes are back in action Feb. 24-25 at the ICON Invitational, hosted by Houston at The Woodlands Country Club.
