PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – The No. 3 Kent State women's golf team is in second place after a rain-plagued opening round at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Sunday at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
The first round was suspended Sunday evening with three groups still on the course. The opening round will be completed Monday morning before the 12 p.m. ET start of the second round. The day also consisted of a lengthy weather delay mid-round.
"The team battled today," said head coach Lisa Strom. "Tough weather and a difficult golf course required mental toughness and I'm proud of the way they competed. We didn't finish as strong as we wanted, but were right where we want to be. I expect us to come out for round two ready to go and be in position for the final round."
The Flashes carded a 5-over 289 in the opening round. No. 25 Auburn is in the lead with a 1-under par 283.
Junior Kory Nielsen's 70 (-1) led the Flashes in the first round with the help from a trio of birdies on the front nine and finishing the day with four total. She is tied for fifth.
"Kory has an excellent round hitting twelve greens, ball striking is key out here with the small greens. I'm happy for her to put a solid round together. She's been working hard on her putting and mental game."
Freshman Caley McGinty carded a 72 (+1) after she fired three birdies on the day. Junior Chloe Salort is tied for 19th after posting a 73 (+2) with three birdies. Senior Karoline Stormo posted a 74 (+3) and senior Pimnipa Panthong finished with a 79 (+8).
