
Byland's Pin Leads Flashes Against Chips

Mt. Pleasant, MI- Kade Byland earned a pin and Andrew McNally and Tim Rooney earned victories but Central Michigan prevailed 27-12 in a Sunday afternoon MAC dual.
The teams started at 174 and McNally kept things rolling. The Uniontown native got a reversal and three takedowns in the first two periods and rolled to his 14th straight victory, a 12-6 victory by decision after getting the riding time bonus. McNally improved to a team-best 28-7 on the season.
Shane Mast got the nod at 184 and things picked up after a defensive and scoreless first period. Cushman got an escape and a takedown in the second period but Mast battled back with an escape of his own, plus a penalty point on Cushman. In the third period, Cushman got an advantage, earning the riding time advantage point. Mast was able to earn a late escape point, but the riding time proved to be the difference in the 4-3 victory by decision for Cushman.
In a rematch from an instant classic at the Mountaineer Invite, Colin McCracken and Landon Pelham delivered again. The two battled to a scoreless first period and each earned an escape with neither wrestler able to gain any sort of riding time control. Late in the third period, Pelham was able to secure a takedown with just five seconds left to stun McCracken in a 3-1 victory by decision.
In the heavyweight bout, Spencer Berthold drew the tough task of the nation's #4 wrestler in Matt Stencel. Berthold nearly had a takedown early on, but Stencel was ruled out of bounds. On the reset, Stencel was able to get the trip on Berthold and secured the pin in the first period. At 125, Tomas Gutierrez also drew the MAC's top wrestler in Drew Hildebrandt. Gutierrez played strong defense in the opening period, sending the bout scoreless to the second period. Hildebrandt earned an escape and a takedown to earn a 3-0 advantage. It became 5-0 on a third period takedown but Gutierrez countered with a nice reversal to get on the board. Gutierrez would earn another escape but it wouldn't be enough as Hildebrandt took the victory by decision.
It was an eventful start at 133 as Tim Rooney took on Drew Marten. Rooney started the scoring off with a quick takedown only to see Marten escape and earn a takedown of his own, Rooney countered back with his own escape and draw the match even at three after the opening period. Rooney earned another takedown in the second, but it was matched by a pair of Marten escapes to keep the match even after two periods. In the third period, Rooney was able to counter into a takedown to take an 8-5 lead. The fifth-year senior would add another takedown late to earn the 10-6 victory by decision.
Ian Senz got the nod to take on the MAC's #2 wrestler at 141 in Dresden Simon. Senz wrestled hard, earning a first period escape. In the second period, Simon got position on Senz and put the freshman in awkward position, Senz tried to get out of bounds to no avail with Simon earning the pin. At 149, Komara took on freshman Corbyn Munson. The sophomore got on the board early with a quick takedown, an escape by Munson made it 2-1 after the first. Both wrestlers would trade escapes but Munson would gain an advantage in the third period. Munson was able to get a takedown that he then leveraged into back points, that eliminated Komara's riding time advantage and led t0 the victory by decision.
Brady Chrisman took on CMU senior Logan Parks, who had risen to the MAC's #4 wrestler at 157 in the latest conference rankings. Chrisman defending well against the senior, but did surrender a first-period takedown. Parks would get an escape and another takedown in the second to build a lead. Chrisman would do a nice job battling back, earning a pair of escapes but Parks earned the decision. In the final match of the day, Kade Byland took on Blake Montrie. Early in the dual Byland, quickly got the advantage on Montrie. Byland was able to spin a takedown into a pin, earning the fall at the 2:28 mark as the Flashes closed the dual on a strong note.
The loss drops Kent State to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the MAC. The Golden Flashes are back in action next Friday night in the regular season finale at Clarion. The dual is set for a 7 p.m. start.
