MORGANTOWN, WV- Kent State started the 2021 championship season taking on the host West Virginia Mountaineers and the Virginia Tech Hokies as part of the Mountaineer Duals.
The Flashes fell 22-9 to the host Mountaineers and 32-9 to the #9 Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday. Andrew McNally led the charge for Kent State, the senior picked up a pair of victories by decision. McNally topped WVU's Scott Joll 8-3 in the opener and earned a 13-8 decision against Dakota Howard of Virginia Tech.
Against the Mountaineers, Jake Ferri got a pair of escapes and a takedown in the second period to earn a 4-3 victory by decision over Killian Cardinale as Kent State took an early 3-0 lead. The Flashes were on the wrong end of a one-point decision at 133 pounds as a third-period escape helped Joey Thomas edge Patrick Gould 4-3. WVU edged the Flashes in the next five matches before McNally's 8-3 victory snapped the streak. Tyler Bates capped the scoring for Kent State with a win at 184. He forced extra time with a third-period escape before getting a takedown in the first overtime for the 6-4 victory.
Virginia Tech got the victory at 125 pounds to take the early lead in the second dual of the day for both teams. Brendon Fenton earned his first varsity win at Kent State with a 5-2 victory by decision over Brandon Wittenberg. Kody Komara was on the right side of a one-point decision with a 3-2 win over Jake Hart to even his record at 1-1 on the day. McNally got the win over Dakota Howard by scoring six of the final seven points and busting open a 7-7 tie.
Kent State also wrestled the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, but no team score was taken. The two MAC rivals wrestled in a non-team scoring format as a way to get wrestlers extra matches. We will have those results when they become available.
The Flashes are back in action next weekend, opening up Mid-American Conference play with a familiar foe. Kent State will make the quick trip north to Cleveland State to take on the Vikings next Saturday. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
