Strong Throws, Sprints Lead Flashes at Akron Tri-Meet

AKRON, Ohio - Kent State enjoyed strong performances from its throws and sprints groups Friday at the Akron Tri-Meet.
The Golden Flashes won three of the four throwing events, headlined by Jake Wickey's monster launch of 72'-11" to win the men's weight throw. Wickey topped his previous personal-best set just one week ago by over three feet and moved to second all-time in Kent State's record book.
On the women's side, Grace Luther led a Kent State sweep of the top three spots in the women's weight throw. Luther (54'-04") was joined in the top-three by Marissa Henley (51'-09") and Briana Wright (50'-04").
The Flashes also took the top two spots in the women's shot put. Grace Tennant won with a throw of 52'-5.5" and was followed by Gabby Bailey, who had a mark of 51'-11". Tennant's win was her second of the season and her fourth in her last four trips to Stile Field House dating back to last season.
Kent State also had a strong showing in the sprints for both the men and the women, starting with the 60m hurdles.In the men's hurdles, Alexander Shields set a personal-best of 8.12 to win and was followed to the line by Jacob Mally (8.30). Shields' time puts him ninth all-time at Kent State. Mi'Angel Daniels completed the Flashes' sweep of the hurdles, winning the women's race in a time of 8.94.
Asa Hodrick won both the 60-meter dash (6.83) and the 200-meter dash (21.66) for the men. Jaheim Jones also ran well in both events, finishing second in the 60m (6.89) and third in the 200m (21.83). Dejon Manning opened his collegiate career with second in the 60m (21.80).
In the men's 400m, Justin Dwyer earned second place with a time of 49.11 and Korie Davis II was third in 49.93.
The women saw freshman Aminah Claxton take third in the 400m, debuting with a time of 1:00.62. Fellow freshman Lauren Hadley finish third in the 60m with a time of 7.93.
Freshman pole vaulter Leah Pasqualetti also had a strong debut, clearing 13'-0.25" to finish second. Her vault of puts her seventh all-time on Kent State's performance list.
Also earning top-three finishes for the women were Sarena Choi, who took second in the long jump (18'-07") and third in the triple jump (36'-10.25"), Desiree Thomas, who finished second in the high jump (5'-03.25"), Leah Lisle, who finished the 3,000-meter run second in a time of 10:27.07 and the 4x400m relay team of of Alexandria Verbancic, Claxton, Gabrielle Hawkins, and Julia Brezovec.
For the men, top-three finishes were earned by Kristian Kneffler, who tied for second in the pole vault (15'-06.25"), Del'Mario Hairston, who took second in the triple jump (45'-09.75"), Anthony Milliner, who finished third in the triple jump (45'-09.25"), Nate Cousino, who finished the 800-meter run third in a time of 1:55.96, Drew Johnson, who took third in the mile with a time of 4:16.57, and the 4x400m relay team of Davis II, Dwyer, Jonathan Solomon, and Quintin Cooks that took second with a time of 3:19.81.
Kent State is off next week before heading back to Stile Field House for the Akron Invitational on February 5-6.
