(KENT, Ohio) - The Kent State women's soccer team defeated visiting Ball State at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium Sunday, 3-0. This improved the Golden Flashes' record to 10-4-1 this season, including 6-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
Sunday was Senior Day for Kent State, as five members of the Golden Flashes roster were honored prior to the game: forward Khyla Porter, forward Autumn Meisenburg, defender Tianna Harris, forward Cameron Shedenhelm, and defender Karly Hellstrom.
After the pregame festivities were over and the game had started, the Flashes found their rhythm offensively. Hellstrom, the redshirt senior out of Sudbury, Ontario, scored a goal for Kent State in the 13th minute, assisted by sophomore midfielder Giulia Giovinazzi and freshman midfielder Siena Stambolich. No scoring would occur again for another 60 game minutes, when the Flashes would double their lead on a goal by redshirt sophomore forward Lauryn Arruda, once again assisted by Giulia Giovinazzi. A third Flashes goal came in the 84th minute, when Cameron Shedenhelm picked up her ninth goal of the year and 21st of her career, putting the game out of reach for Ball State. Khyla Porter got the assist on that one.
it was made evident early on that this would be a game with constant whistle-blowing. In the eighth minute, when Ball State defender Emily Simmons was given a yellow card, no one in the stadium could have foresaw a total of seven cards being given out over the course of the game, with six being given to the Cardinals. Along with Simmons, defender Lexy Smith and defender Grace Alsop were also given cards. In fact, Smith was the recipient of a yellow card and a red card, ejecting her from the match in the 39th minute and forcing Ball State to play with a one-player disadvantage the rest of the way. Also being given cards were two of Ball State's coaches, one of whom was ejected with a red card as well.
But despite the cards not going the Cardinals' way, Ball State actually fared better on the foul front, only succumbing to six over the course of the match, compared to Kent State's 12. Ball State also had more saves than the Flashes (6-12 again), shots, (22-13), shots on-goal (12-9), and corner kicks (7-4). Yet none of that mattered in the end, as the only metric that truly matters is goals scored, a category which Kent State dominated in this game.
As the season winds down, Kent State looks to make a push for the number one seed in the MAC tournament over their last three games. The first of those last three is slated for Thursday, when the Chippewas of Central Michigan travel to Kent. That affair is set to kick off at 7 PM.
