
Kent State Soccer Falls In Penalty Shootout to Ball State In MAC Tournament

Columbus, Ohio-Â The Kent State Soccer team dropped a heart-breaker in the Mid-American Conference Soccer Quarterfinals to No. 4 Ball State at Historic Crew Stadium on Saturday. After a scoreless 110 minutes with regulation and two overtimes, the two teams went to eight rounds of penalty shoot-outs where the Cardinals won by a tally of 5-4.
Both teams went through a scoreless half, but the Golden Flashes won the time of possession battle with a few good chances in front of the net that resulted in saves from Ball State goalie Kate Pallante. That included three shots on goal from freshman forward Mia Cleroux.
The stiff defense on both ends held for the second half while Kent State and Ball State both had opportunities to capitalize. The game went scoreless through the end of regulation as well as two ten-minute overtime periods to set up a penalty shoot-out.
Ball State edged Kent State in eight rounds of penalty kicks after making their first two; KSU then evened it up making two of their next two. Though the Cardinals had the edge by a count of 5-4; Kelsey Salopek, Abby Breitschuh, Allison Collins and Addy Cusick made theirs for the Blue and Gold.
The Flashes held the ball for a good portion of the game as they out-shot the Cardinals by a count of 20-8 with 11 Shots on Goal compared to Ball State's two. Ball State won in the corner kick department throughout the game by a count of 7-3. Junior goalkeeper Leah Shaffer finished the quarterfinal match-up with two saves while Pallante had 11 for the Cardinals.
