DEKALB, Ill. – Kent State lost to Northern Illinois, 3-0, (22-25, 17-25, 19-25) in a Mid-American Conference volleyball contest on Friday night.
The Golden Flashes (10-14, 5-7 MAC) scored the first two points of the night and played from ahead for much of the opening set. A kill by senior Melissa Kolurbasi, followed by a Huskies attack error gave Kent State its largest lead of the set at 18-14. The hosts countered by winning seven of the next eight points, however, and went on to win the set, 25-22.
A slow start had the Flashes trailing 10-3 to start the second set. A 4-0 run cut the deficit to four at 16-12, but NIU countered by taking four of the next five points to push the lead back to seven. The Huskies won the final three points of the set to win 25-17.
A kill by junior Morgan Copley tied it at 3-3 in the third set, but NIU followed with a 12-4 run to pull away. The Flashed were able to get within four points on four occasions but dropped the set by a score of 25-19.
Junior Taylor Heberle led the attack with 10 kills and Kolurbasi was close behind with eight. Redshirt senior Alex Haffner registered 27 assists and senior Danie Tyson had both of Kent State's aces on the night.
Senior Erin Gardner was solid in the back row and tallied 22 digs. Copley totaled a team-high three blocks.
Kent State will play its final match of the season against a MAC West opponent on Saturday with first serve at Western Michigan scheduled for 3 p.m.
