KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kent State allowed host Western Michigan to hit at a .339 clip during a 3-0 (12-25, 14-25, 19-25) loss on Saturday.
The Golden Flashes (10-15, 5-8 MAC) lost the first five points of the match before battling back to within 9-7 following consecutive kills by senior Melissa Kolurbasi. The Broncos answered with a 9-2 run and went on to take the set, 25-12.
Another slow start in the second set had the Flashes trailing 7-2. Kent State was unable to get closer than three points the rest of the way and fell 25-14.
Junior Morgan Copley gave the Flashes their first lead of the day with a solo stuff to open the third set. WMU won the next four points, but Kent State took seven of 10 points a little later to go ahead 11-10. The offense was unable to sustain a high level of production, however, and the Broncos closed it out with a 25-19 victory.
Junior Savannah Matthews led the attack with nine kills. Junior Taylor Heberle and redshirt junior Jacqlyn Caspers added eight and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Kiersten Kraus had a career-high 18 assists.
Senior Erin Gardner tallied 20 digs, which was nine more than any other player in the match.
Kent State will visit Bowling Green next weekend for its final two road contests of the season.
